Get help with your FAFSA at College Goal Sunday on Feb. 12

College Goal Sunday is an opportunity for students and parents to get free help in filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA. The FAFSA is the first step and a Federal requirement for all college students who plan to pay for college with the help of:

 

 

  • Grants
  • Scholarships
  • Work Study Funds
  • Student Loans

Get your taxes done for free at Aims through Tax Help Colorado

Taxpayers who earn less than $49,000 can get help preparing and e-filing their taxes for free at Aims Community College through Tax Help Colorado, a program funded by a grant from the Denver-based Piton Foundation, operating at 15 colleges statewide.

 

Aims has helped more than 2,000 Weld County tax payers claim more than $3 million in federal and state refunds in the past three years through the program. Students from Aims and the University of Northern Colorado, as well as community volunteers, will be helping with tax preparation this year.

“Tax Help Colorado has been a tremendous success and is an extremely rewarding experience,” said Aims Accounting Instructor Gina Jones. “Our volunteer tax preparers and quality reviewers are well-trained individuals who are dedicated to superior customer service and producing a quality product. This is also a tremendous benefit to our local businesses as the refund dollars are spent in our communities. I am looking forward to another successful year.”

Interested parties should bring the following documents:

  • All W-2, 1099 and other income-related documents
  • Proof of mortgage interest, property taxes, daycare payments, college education expenses, charitable contributions and all other tax-deductible expenses
  • Social Security cards for all family members
  • A copy of last year’s tax return, if available
  • Bank account number and routing number to direct deposit refunds (direct deposit refunds will be received in 7 to 10 days)

Tax Help Colorado will be operating at Aims Community College on the following dates:

  • Greeley campus
    • Mondays, Feb. 6 through Feb. 27, 4 to 7 p.m.
    • Fridays, Feb. 3 through April 13, 1 to 7 p.m. (except for March 9 and 16)
  • Fort Lupton campus
  • Saturday Feb. 11 and Saturday Feb. 25, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Aims students can win money in leadership competition through Upstate Colorado Economic Development

Aims Community College is partnering with Upstate Colorado Economic Development on a research “white paper” competition titled “Reinvigorating the Region: Community Service Learning Research Competition.” $500, $250, and $100 prizes will be awarded for the first, second and third place essays, and certificates of recognition will be awarded to all participants.

Mark your calendars for upcoming Spring Job and Internship Fairs

Spring Job and Internship Fair Opportunities are right around the corner! Aims students and alumni are invited to attend the Spring Job and Internship Fairs being held at UNC.

 

The partnership that we have with UNC provides a great opportunity for you to attend these large events so don’t miss out.

Plan ahead, prepare and get ready to engage with hiring managers. Remember, any opportunity to meet face-to-face with employers who are hiring or recruiting for current/future positions is not to be missed! Prepare your resume, dress PROFESSIONALLY and come on out for this event.

Camp Day & Summer Employment Fair

  • Wednesday February 8 from 12 to 4 p.m.
  • University Center 2nd floor, Ballrooms
  • This fair will be geared toward summer employment opportunities including employment opportunities with various local camps and camps from across the country.

Spring Job and Internship Fair

  • Thursday February 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the University Center, 2nd floor Ballrooms
  • This fair will be geared toward professional internship opportunities and post graduation employment opportunities.
  • Additionally, job seekers will have an opportunity to network with employers from the Helping Professions and Nonprofit industry and the Criminal Justice industry from 5-6:30 pm located on the 2nd floor of the University Center.

Here is a quick checklist of what to do before attending a fair or networking event:

  • Develop your resume; Information about resume preparation can be found at www.aims.edu/student/career (Students dropdown menu>Job Search Skills>Resumes).
  • Have your resume reviewed by an advisor. Resume Review appointments can be made by calling the SSC scheduling number at 970-339-6251.
  • Research companies of interest- Look at their mission statement and learn about the company so that you can speak with the recruiters specifically about their company. Closer to the event information about attending employers can be found at www.unco.edu/careers/student/events.
  • Apply online on the employer’s website before the event to demonstrate you are serious about the opportunity.
  • After the event, make sure to follow-up with the employers by sending a thank you note.

Black History Week culminates with portrayal of ex-slave and Civil War soldier

February 6: "Keeping the Dream Alive" Contest

February 9: “Black History: The Ultimate Collection Documentary”
Join us on February 9 in CCTR 226 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. for a documentary that explores slavery, freedom, and the Civil Rights Movement of African-Americans in recognition of Black History Month.  Sponsored by the Associated Students of Aims Community College. February 10: (Human2Human Series) Black History Live: Portrayal of an Ex-slave and Civil War soldier, Angus Augustus Burleigh
What was life like for an ex-slave and soldier struggling to fight for freedom at the height of prejudice and slavery during the Civil War?  In commemoration of Black History Month and the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, don’t miss Hasan Davis, a noted Kentucky poet, scholar, storyteller, youth advocate, and Chautauqua presenter, as he brings to life Angus Augustus Burleigh, an ex-slave, soldier, scholar, educator and minister.  Hasan Davis draws on his multiple talents to present African-American characters from the past in ways that motivate students and encourage audiences to read and understand more about our shared history and diverse culture.  Davis holds a Juris Doctorate, serves on the Federal Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee, and owns his own business, Empowerment Solutions, focusing on youth development. 

Join us on February 10 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Ed Beaty Hall Theater (Room 102). Lunch provided.  Offered as part of the Human2Human Diversity Series in conjunction with the Diversity Council, Associated Students, and Center for Professional Development.

Student Involvement Fair set for Feb. 8

AAWCC announces two $500 scholarships

Get Started sessions offered in Greeley, Fort Lupton and Loveland this week

The free Get Started sessions at Aims provide information about our programs, how to enroll, how to apply for financial aid and services. 

 

Greeley sessions are held the first and third Monday of each month in College Center 215 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. (optional campus tour included).  An Aims advisor is there to answer questions and address any concerns.

All are welcome to attend  - no appointment needed.  

Loveland campus Get Started sessions are held on the second Wednesday of each month (one session at 1 p.m., one at 5:30 p.m.), and Fort Lupton campus Get Started sessions are offered on the first Monday of each month (one session at 12:30 p.m., one at 5:30 p.m.).

University of Denver offering an opportunity to learn about the accounting profession

The University of Denver is inviting community college students in the African-American, Hispanic or Native-American communities to an all-expense paid experience to live on the University of Denver campus from June 24 to June 28 and learn about the accounting profession.

 

Students will engage in activities to learn about professional development, financial literacy, accounting education at four year universities and becoming a Certified Public Accountant. The application deadline is April 1. Students apply at www.thiswaytocpa.com/asdp.

ASACC partners with Student Health 101 on monthly online healthcare magazine

The Associated Students of Aims Community College has entered into an agreement with Student Health 101, a monthly online healthcare magazine that will be available to students and employees. 

 

The magazine supports the mission and role of the Associated Students’  MyLife Team with timely articles about health topics relating to college students. We encourage everyone to use the following link or the link available on the Student Life page on the Aims website.
